Hugo Alfvén International Choir Festival

Four days of choral music in a city known for its many excellent choirs — one festival with two ways to take part.

Two ways to take part

Compete, or simply sing

(01) The Competition

Ten choirs, one category

From the applicants we will select ten choirs to compete. There is only one category — mixed adult choir with a minimum of 32 and a maximum of 45 singers. Five choirs reach the final.

(02) Open Festival

Sing without competing

For choirs that do not wish to compete, or who are not selected for the competition — friendship concerts around Uppsala, workshops, festival concerts and a great choir party.

(03) The namesake

Hugo Alfvén

Hugo Alfvén is Sweden’s most renowned and popular composer, both in Sweden and abroad. With this background, we find it entirely natural to name the festival after him.

Alfvén served as Director Musices at Uppsala University and as Artistic Director of the Royal Academic Orchestra from 1910–39, and he conducted both the male choir Orphei Drängar and the mixed choir Allmänna Sången in Uppsala for several decades.

It is therefore equally natural to hold the festival in Uppsala, a city well known for its many excellent choirs.
